This course is for those with summer hill walking experience who would like to make the transition into winter mountaineering.
The course aims to introduce you to the basics of winter mountaineering whilst climbing some of the classic Scottish mountaineering routes.
Although weather dependant it will typically involve visits to the Western Highlands making use of the fantastic mountaineering terrain on offer.
Content
As with all courses content will vary depending on participants experience and prevailing weather conditions. The main topics to be covered will include:
- Avalanche Awareness
- Interpretation of winter weather forecasts
- Winter Equipment
- Personal movement on snow
- The use of crampons and single axe
- Ice axe braking
- Winter navigation
- Route Planning
- Winter Hazards and emergency procedures
Pre-requisites
A good level of fitness and summer hill walking experience are essential to get the most from this course. Some summer scrambling or rock climbing experience would also be beneficial but this is not a compulsory pre-requisite.
