Today was day 3 of the winter mountaineering course for Tollymore. The guys were keen to look at rope work and pitching on not only snow, but on rocky mixed round and using some rock gear aswell. We started the day of with a rope work session back at base, this gave a good oportunity to get to grips with some new skills without being battered by the wind. After lunch we headed upto the Ciste crag, which is low lying and sheltered from the wind. We spent a bit of time building belays in the sunshine, before the snow started, and the crag seemed to change from summer conditions to winter in the blink of an eye. After a bit of time at the bottom of the crag we climbed some easy ground on the right hand side in three pitches, giving each of the guys a chance to lead, set up a belay, and bring the rest of the team up. Once on top we packed the kit away and headed back to a chalet that looked much more wintery than the one we had left, winters back….for now!
