The Mountain Leader Award is for those who wish to lead others in the mountains, hills, and moorlands of Ireland and the UK, in summer conditions.
Mountain Leader training is usually split into two blocks, Mountain Leader 1 and 2, but can also be completed in one week long block.
Before booking onto a training course participants must be registered.
To register candidates must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a current member of one of the three Mountaineering Councils: Mountaineering Ireland, the British Mountaineering Council or Mountaineering Scotland.
- Have passed the Mountain Skills Assessment
Mountain Leader 1
This 2 day course introduces candidates to the award and begins to dig into the mountain leader syllabus. Main syllabus areas covered will include: Equipment, mountain weather, navigation, leadership and party management, mountain hazards and risk assessment, access and conservation, flora and fauna, and steep ground management.
Dates: 4th-5th April
Mountain leader 2
This 3 day course is a continuation of mountain leader 1 and main topics will be carried through from the previous course. In addition candidates will also cover planning, expedition and camp craft skills, night navigation, emergency rope work, river crossing, and emergency procedures.
Dates: 22nd-24th May
Mountain leader training week
This 5 day course is a combination on mountain leader 1 and 2 and covers all aspects of the scheme.
