The biggest step you will make in your climbing career is getting on the sharp end! The learn to lead course aims to ensure you have all the necessary skills in place to make your transition to becoming a rock climbing leader as smooth as possible.
The primary focus of the Learn to lead is to get climbers closer to being independent lead climbers.
The decision to become a lead climber is one of the biggest steps we can take within climbing and is not to be taken lightly. It is therefore our goal to ensure participants have all the necessary skills in place before beginning to lead, and although everyone may not reach the stage of actually leading a graded climb within the time frame of the course they will come away with an increased knowledge and a clear idea to the remaining steps to take on their path to becoming a lead climber.
Course content
As much time as possible will be spent teaching on graded rock climbs. The structure of the course will be fairly flexible to suit the varying levels of participants experience, however main topics to be covered may include:
- Review of tying in and belaying
- Review of climbing calls
- The use of guidebooks and route selection
- Placing gear
- Building belays
- Placing gear whilst on lead
- Tactics on traditional climbs
- Getting off the crag
Each day will start with a general introduction at an agreed meeting point, giving the instructor an opportunity to discuss individual aims and objectives for the day.
